Roscommon v Sligo, Connaught SFC Final 2010
Pictures Here

Donie Shine was Sligo's destroyer as he kicked Roscommon to their first Connacht SFC title since 2001.

Man-of-the-match Shine fired over 0-10 (0-06f, 0-01 '45') to inspire the underdogs to victory in what a gripping contest in Castlebar.

The Rossies' midfield dominance cemented a 0-10 to 0-06 half-time advantage for them, with experienced defender David Casey among the scorers.

A run of four successive points around the hour mark, including two from top scorer Alan Costello (0-05), had Sligo back level, but Shine landed the winner from a 69th minute free.

It was a richly deserved success for O'Donnell's charges who were relegated from NFL Division 3 during the spring and given little chance of becoming Connacht champions at the outset.

But wins over London and Leitrim spread confidence throughout the panel, and this afternoon's performance saw them take the game to Sligo right from the off.

The Yeats men seemed to have done the hard work in defeating Connacht's 'big two', Mayo and Galway, in the previous two rounds.

Tony Taylor returned from injury to partner Stephen Gilmartin in the Sligo midfield, with manager Kevin Walsh otherwise naming an unchanged team in the pursuit of the county's second provincial title since 2007.

In a late change before the throw-in, Paul Garvey was replaced in the Roscommon attack by David O'Gara, his team-mate from that famous 2006 All-Ireland minor win.

There was no sense of panic from O'Donnell's young guns when Costello pointed Sligo ahead after just 20 seconds. They hit back with two blockbuster scores from Shine, one a curling free after Ger Heneghan was fouled and the second a meaty '45' after Heneghan had a shot blocked.

Roscommon's midfield pairing of Michael Finneran and Karol Mannion outplayed their direct opponents as the first half progressed, Finneran coming up with some fine high catches. And the elusive Cathal Cregg and David Keenan, in the half-forwards, were causing plenty of problems for the Sligo defence.

Casey, who has had a cruel run of luck with knee injuries, raided forward to kick Roscommon's third point in the ninth minute, and the free-flowing football continued as Costello sliced superbly through the ball for his second and Shine dangled over his first from play, wide out on the left.

Shine, the scorer of 1-16 against London and Leitrim, was not just deadly accurate from placed balls. He was menace in open play too, proving a handful for Sligo full-back Noel McGuire to deal with. Most of the traffic was towards the Sligo goal, so much so that their key forward David Kelly hardly touched the ball in the opening 20 minutes.

In between misses from Shine and Gilmartin, Cregg created enough space to smack over a fine point off his left and make it 0-05 to 0-02. Mark Breheny (free) and Colm McGee ('45') steadied Sligo somewhat, but scores from Keenan, Shine (0-02) and O'Gara had the Rossies comfortably ahead at 0-10 to 0-04.

The pick of those scores came in the 21st minute when Cregg dinked a clever ball through for Shine to collect, turn and point in an instant.

Sligo, who brought on Eugene Mullen for Taylor, put on a much-needed spurt in first half injury-time. Eamon O'Hara hand-passed for Marren to score and the latter then popped over a free, awarded against Sean McDermott, to cut the gap to four points at the break.

The windy conditions played havoc with shooting at times, and both sides fluffed their lines as the second half started. McGee and Mannion kicked wides, Sligo substitute Mullen also watched his effort get caught by the breeze and the energetic Jonathan Davey dropped another shot short of the posts.

Marren though showed his increasing influence by stroking over off his left, five minutes in, and the deficit was down to three. So it stayed as another textbook free from Shine was replied to by an inspirational score from Sligo captain Charlie Harrison.

Sligo boss Walsh turned to his bench in an attempt to wrestle back control of the game, making four changes by the hour mark. But Shine, the nerveless 21-year-old, continued to drive his side closer to the Nestor Cup. Another great turn and point pushed Roscommon's lead to 0-12 to 0-08.

The DCU student missed a kickable free in the 54th minute, for one of his few wayward attempts on goal, and Sligo really raised their game over the next 10 minutes.

Kelly got past McDermott's challenge, close to the end-line, and forced Roscommon goalkeeper Geoffrey Claffey into a point blank save. Claffey infringed as he grappled for the loose ball, and Breheny sent over the resulting free.

O'Hara played his part in setting up Costello for a lovely score, and the former Mayo player repeated the trick just moments later, getting away from Casey to pull the trigger from distance.

The sides were level for only the second time - at 0-12 apiece - when substitute Sean Davey rifled over in the 63rd minute. Roscommon were suddenly struggling to get past midfield and there was evidence that they were tiring as Sligo got on top.

Davey missed a chance to put his side ahead, registering their seventh wide, and Shine coolly kicked Roscommon back in front in the 66th minute, nudging a free over from the left.

It looked like being a shootout between Shine and Costello when the Sligo wing forward, a real star of their Championship run, thumped over another terrific point from play - his fifth in all - to square things up again.

The questions were being asked and Roscommon, written off by many beforehand, showed that they had the answers. Shine, once again, stepped up to the mark.

He went into double figures in his first Connacht SFC final when converting a free from the left and a subsequent wide from substitute Davey was the closest Sligo came to an equaliser.

Injury-time came and went and Roscommon, 20-point losers to Mayo at this venue last year, stood firm to make the biggest wave of the 2010 Championship to date.

Their 20th Connacht senior title, and probably the sweetest of them all. The Connacht Under-21 trophy was also won earlier this year by the Rossies, emphasising that this should not be a false dawn. It is easy to imagine one of the county's favourite sons, the late Dermot Earley snr, smiling approvingly from above.

Galway v Sligo, Connaught Senior Football Championship Semi Final 2010

Defender Garrett Bradshaw kicked an injury-time free to earn a gutsy 1-10 to 1-10 draw for 14-man Galway in the Connacht Senior Football Championship semi-final.

Sligo had the winning of this Salthill encounter, having built a 1-08 to 0-02 half-time lead with a blustery wind behind them.

Man-of-the-match David Kelly (1-03) and Colm McGee (0-03) impressed as the Yeats men dominated in front of a 12,829 attendance.

Galway lost Sean Armstrong to a second yellow card, just four minutes into the second half, and Joe Kernan's men had it all to do.

But Championship veteran Padraic Joyce stepped up to the plate, inspiring his side with a six-point tally and handpassing through for Eoin Concannon to collect a crucial late goal.

That left a single point between the sides and substitute Michael Meehan drew a foul in the third minute of injury-time that resulted in Bradshaw's levelling score.

Gunning for only their third Championship win over Galway in 35 years, Sligo will get a chance to right the wrongs of this second-half in next Saturday's replay at Markievicz Park.

Sligo started with a strong breeze behind them and flung the evergreen Eamonn O'Hara in at full-forward, while Galway switched Joe Bergin to midfield for the throw-in.

The early exchanges were typically fast-paced and frenetic and Alan Costello inspired a sharp counter attack from Sligo, setting Charlie Harrison free down the right. However, the team captain could not cap off the move with a point.

Galway opened the scoring in the fourth minute as Bergin, now playing in a more advanced role, swooped on a ball in from Gary Sice and fisted over from the edge of the square.

Sligo's response was swift, Colm McGee bending a free over from the left wing and David Kelly turning smartly to point from close range.

Keelan Cawley, who was busy throughout, clipped a lovely low ball in to Kelly who gathered and turned onto his right for a tidy finish.

The Galway markers were not as tight as their Sligo counterparts, as evidenced by comfortable scores for Alan Costello and Mark Breheny.

Replying to a free from Padraic Joyce, Costello sent over a towering point off his left and Breheny made it 0-04 to 0-02 to Sligo, once again exploiting the space in the Tribesmen's defence.

The Galway forwards were coming deeper and deeper in pursuit of possession and their frustration grew as Sean Armstrong dropped a point attempt short of the uprights and Bergin, driving in along the end line, was foiled by a well-timed challenge from Harrison.

Sligo's industry and hard running helped set up a well-taken point from Tony Taylor on the left, after Breheny and Costello had secured a quick turnover of possession.

Taylor and Stephen Gilmartin, Sligo's midfield pairing, were beginning to set the tone in centre-field and when Cawley polished off a point, following a quick one-two with Johnny Davey, Galway were 0-06 to 0-02 in arrears.

Corner forward Kelly then showed his pace on the ball and finishing ability when breaking through for the goal. He dummied a pass and raced past Alan Burke before stabbing a right-footed shot to the bottom right corner of the net.

McGee followed up with two more frees, the second coming after Diarmuid Blake was easily beaten to a loose ball by Breheny and was whistled up for a foul. Yellow cards for Kieran Fitzgerald, Armstrong and Blake in quick succession did little for Galway's flagging spirits.

Kernan's charges opened the second half with a point from Concannon, but a mistimed challenge by Armstrong on Davey saw referee David Coldrick reach for his yellow and red cards.

That was the signal for the introduction of Michael Meehan, who had his right knee heavily bandaged. The Caltra clubman was clearly not match fit but his presence gave Sligo some extra headaches.

It also created some extra space for Joyce and he kicked the next four points for the home side, two of which were from play. Joyce and Kelly traded points before the former landed a free for a 1-09 to 0-05 scoreline.

The Killererin ace then wormed his way past three Sligo defenders to claim the point of the match and although Galway, who were getting a grip on midfield, kicked three subsequent wides, Joyce delivered again with a slick point off his left.

Meehan was wayward with two point attempts and Sligo were also looking jittery in attack. They broke forward and should have punished some lacklustre Galway defending, only for Costello to drop his shot short of the posts and an unmarked Cawley was too casual when drifting his effort to the left and wide.

Both sides showed a lack of composure as the pressure increased and with two minutes of normal time remaining, Meehan was involved in a move that ended with Sice splitting the posts for 1-09 to 0-08.

Kelly wrong-footed two Galway players before stroking over a much-needed score for Sligo and with O'Hara stationed in defence, they had three minutes of injury-time to survive whatever the Tribesmen could throw at them.

Joyce crept his side closer with another solid strike off his left and Bergin and Joyce did the donkey work in setting up the onrushing Concannon for a lovely left-footed dink to the net.

In the dying seconds, Galway forced a late attack and when Meehan was grounded by O'Hara's outstretched leg, Bradshaw stepped up to slot over from close range and complete his side's comeback.

Scorers: Galway: P Joyce 0-06 (0-03f), E Concannon 1-01, J Bergin, G Sice, G Bradshaw (0-01f) 0-01 each

Roscommon Race Meet, June 2010

Had my first crack at Horse Racing photography this evening over at Roscommon's race track. Interestin event, bar the fairly long pauses between each event, which I'm sure the bookies used to full affect in cleaning out the punters pockets. Seven races filled the card, with the first two being flat races and all the rest being over hurdles. For full results go here, and hope you like the photos.

Went down to Knockcroghery on Sunday to cover Alan Gately Memorial Hurling tournament, and my Dye sub printer got its first outing, which thankfully went well. Three games in all, and the weather decided to play ball in the end, but not after a good soaking...

Covered this event last year too, if anybody would like to see last years pics let me know and I'll post them back up.

Tries for Johnny O'Connor and George Naoupu weren't enough to give Connacht a win at the Sportsground on Sunday evening as they went down 12 - 18 to Munster.

Paul Warwick kicked two penalties as well as converting Scott Deasy's try while Niall Ronan added another try.

Munster led 6-0 before Johnny O'Connor crossed for a great try after twelve minutes which was converted from the right by Ian Keatley.

Munster hit back with as try from Ronan and Deasy crossed shortly after the restart.

Naoupu hit back in the final quarter but a late Connacht onslaught failed to yield a match-winning score as Connacht surrendered their unbeaten home run.
